Redwing and Rook by ianmsquee Redwing and Rook by ianmsquee
Concept Art
An Explanation Ok, most of you likely know i'm a pretty big Batman fan (nerd *sigh) In order, my favorite characters are: Cassandra Cain, Bruce Wayne, and Tim Drake. (Damian is starting to grow on me...)

I was (like pretty much everyone else) really angry when DC trashed Cassandra's character and the lame recovery attempts have been, well... Lame. I like the original C.C. Batgirl series. It was great! And the interaction between Cass & Tim was also great. (well, i liked it.) then everything went crappy...

Now i've heard DC is planning a come-back of Cass and i'd love to see her teamed up with Tim. Just one little problem for me there. I can't stand the Red Robin Name & outfit... the name is kind of a mouth full. It would be a ridiculous to yell the full name in the middle of a crisis and given the amount he teams up with Dick and Damian lately it gets down right annoying. Also the name feels like he's trying to hang on to something he's grown out of... As for the costume, even in the comic it's been pointed out he looks like some other hero (who the heck is Dr. Midnight??) and in general i'm just not a fan of it.
Sooooooooo...
Here's my Redesigns:
Rook: as in a Crow or Raven (raven is taken, a few times from what i've heard...) i also sort of enjoy the Chess term because a rook is one of your straight forward power pieces. Cass is nothing if not straightforward and let's face it. Tim is a good fighter but in this team-up she's the muscle. I kept the overall look and feel of her old Batgirl outfit. but dropped the full head cowl because 1) i like seeing her face more and 2) she already expressed a lack of concern with keeping her ID all that secret so why not go with the smaller mask. She also has a layered cape. (i just liked the way it looked :) )

Redwing: i wanted to keep some of Tim's key elements and pay a little homage to Nightwing, since Tim is always going to be following in Dick's footsteps. (you'll notice a few differences between the large color & the small turnaround. I can't decide which i like better yet) Obviously the name is a play on Nightwing. I picked up (and toned down) the collar from the original nightwing outfit. (god it was awful) kept the same color scheme as his Red Robin outfit so it's not a huge change. The logo on the larger one is more "batman-ish" and on the smaller one it's more "nightwing-ish" I think i lean towards the big one but which do you guys think is better? And lastly the red "bird-like" face piece on the cowl. (i think it could look pretty cool coming out of the dark at a bad guy... :D )

Anyway, that's enough of a rant from me. I'll post larger versions of the turnaround sketches at some point and i also have them sketched up in the "Animated-Series" style that i think looks pretty good so those will also go up when i get the chance. In the mean time please comment and let me know what you think! :batman:

Thanks! :boogie:
that sounds like a really fun project! i guess my only advise (such as it is) is to start really rough... literally scribble out some ideas and then refine them.
Whenever i try to make something "perfect" the first time or sketch out something exactly as i see it in my head i tend to have a lot of trouble. But when i start drawing something really loose then slowly add detail it works much better.
I don't know if that helps at all but i hope it does

Frankly? With Rook I like the foreground shot better, with Redwing I prefer the pencil drawings in the background. Something about the foreground shot is just.... off. I think it may be his leg length, and besides the background style is just a wee bit cooler to me. Anyhoo, great costume designs. I like them verah much, yees.

This is awesome! Cassandra Cain is my favorite character out of the Bat family, and the things they've done with her storyline lately have pissed me off. I'm happy to hear that there's a comeback planned for her--and I hope her new uniform looks as cool as this. The idea of the smaller face mask is great, along with the layered cape--I can imagine it all swooshing around as she kicks people in the face. Repeatedly. :D
